Americas Cup Wrestling TournamentAmerica’s Cup Wrestling Tournament

Host schools El Dorado and Valencia High in Southern California will be hosting the Fourth annual Americas Cup from May 24 to the 27. The 28 team Dual-Meet tournament includes wrestlers from five different states and local talent from all over the Golden State. With the Asics Fila tournament going on this weekend, America’s Cup looks to showcase talent wrestlers despise many wrestlers attending Asics Fila. Some of the wrestlers have major credentials like being Fargo All-Americans, Flo Nationals Medalist, NHSCA Medalist and being state champions in their respective state. This All-Start event will kick off the weekend with a dual between The California Dream Team versus Team USA. 34 State titles have been won between the two All-Star Teams. Many College Coaches from California and the Nation will be in attendance to see which talented wrestlers can play a key role in their respective program. The Dual will start at 7:30 PM at El Dorado High in Placentia. I spoke to tournament Director and Co-Founder of the event Ernie Ciaccio about the importance of this tournament in California and the grown of it since the first even in 2010 “When we started this event it was under the premise that we felt dual meets with high caliber athletes could create a drama that the sport was desperately in need of. Myself, Ryan Halsey, Adam Tirapelle and others who got the event off the ground really had no idea what the event could be shaped into. But over the last four years we have had teams from Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Florida, and most of the western states”- Ernie Ciaccio

Ernie, what can the fans expect this weekend? “I think the fans will be treated to some amazing action this weekend. There is something magical about this event in the sense that kids seem to just have fun and enjoy the atmosphere which in turn sets the tone for them to open up and create more action than you may expect between high level wrestlers. I think what I am excited most about is the US All Star versus CA Dream Team dual Friday night. This is a concept that we may expand on after this year event if it’s successful. I also love the fact that Flowrestling is covering the event live. I tend to think our organization has been viewed as being revolutionary in many areas of wrestling in California and to align with guys like Adam Fenn and Martin Floriani who have the same vision for the sport of wrestling” – Ernie Ciaccio

Expect many of the wrestlers in attendance to meet up again in the near future. But this time it will be for the chance to be All-Americans in the college and National scene.

Gerry Abas
Episode 34 of The MatBoss Podcast is with four-time All-American and three-time NCAA Division I finalist Gerry Abas of Fresno State. Gerry Abas talks about his start in wrestling in the Bay Area and how his speed, quickness and flash on the wrestling mat had its foundations in break dancing in the 1980s.

He also talks about his classic match and loss to Iowa’s Lincoln McIlravy, coaching his younger brother Stephen at Fresno State, watching the school drop the program and his feelings about it at the time. Abas also speaks about his son Jaden and what we can expect from him on the next level.

Stephen Abas, 2008 Olympic silver medalist and three-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion at Fresno State, has been named head wrestling coach at Fresno High School.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Abas to Fresno Unified, knowing that he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with our Fresno High student-athletes,” said Fresno Unified Superintendent Bob Nelson.
The statement said Abas would take the helm of the Warriors wrestling program at Fresno High immediately.

As a wrestler at Fresno State University, Abas was a four-time NCAA All-American, winning three NCAA titles at 125 pounds in 1999, 2001, and 2002. Abas tallied a 144-4 overall record for the Bulldogs, including 46 pins. Abas’ career winning percentage of 97.3 percent is also a school record. For all these accomplishments, Abas was named the Fresno State Male Athlete of the Year in 1999 and 2001.

Stephen in high school (Canyon Springs HS & James Logan HS) was a 3X CIF state champion and a NHSCA National Champion in 1996.
