Cody Merrill (Gilroy HS) – #2 Recruit in the Nation

The class of 2024 might be the biggest list of commits ever this early into the season for California. This class features two returning state champions in Miguel Estrada from Frontier HS (cs) and Robert Platt from Brawley (sd). Estrada has committed to Iowa and Platt just committed to wrestle at Columbia. State runner-up from a year ago, Brock Mantanona from Palm Desert HS (ss), will be joining his brother Beau at the University of Michigan next Fall. Four other second place finishers from a year ago feature Gavin Bauder from Clovis North HS (cs), Isaiah Quintero from El Dorado HS (ss), Laird Root from Poway HS (sd) and Sonny Kling from Canyon Springs HS (ss). Quintero has committed to wrestle at Purdue, Root to North Carolina, Kling to Cal Baptist and Bauder is still undecided.

Our number one uncommitted recruit is Cody Merrill from Gilroy  who had to skip last season. Currently he’s the number two recruit in the nation by Mat Scouts on Rokfin.

Top 10 Uncommitted California High School Wrestlers from 2023

Last season the class of 2023 produced one state champion in Nicco Ruiz from St. John Bosco. Ruiz had an amazing year winning every tournament he entered. As one of the top recruits in the entire nation, Ruiz gave it verbal commitment to wrestle at Arizona State. Tye Monteiro from Bakersfield, placed 2nd behind state champion, Joseph Martin, at 182 lbs. last season. Monteiro is now a 2X state placer and will be looking for his third medal next year. Monteiro has given his commitment to wrestle at Stanford. Beau Mantanona from Palm Desert gave his verbal commitment in February to the University of Michigan. Many people were shocked that he didn’t follow his brother’s footsteps in signing with Oklahoma but should be a great fit for him.

Our number one uncommitted recruit is Maxx Martinez who had to skip last season due to injury. Look for him to have an amazing season should he be able to come back strong and healthy.

Top 10 Uncommitted California High School Wrestlers from 2022

It’s no question that Joey Cruz and Joseph Martin are the two California wrestlers that are at the top of their class. Both wrestlers have proven that they can contend with nationally ranked opponents the past few years. Cruz, now attending Bullard High School, has been nationally ranked among the top five in his weight class the past two seasons. Martin, from Buchanan High School, is currently ranked in the #5 at 170 lbs. in all major ranking websites.

Here are the top wrestlers from the class of 2022 that are uncommitted and should be giving their college commitments within the next year. We thought it would be fun to predict a few colleges where each wrestler could find a home.
