Iowa State Wrestling

Coby Merrill, California’s reigning high school wrestling heavyweight, has made it official: he’s headed to Ames. The state champion announced via social media that he’s committed to wrestle for Iowa State University.

Representing John W. North High School, Merrill is ranked No. 7 nationally by MatScouts — and for good reason. He tore through the 2024 season with a perfect 48-0 record, capping it off with a dominant run to the 285-pound state title.

But Merrill didn’t just win — he overwhelmed. Forty-four of his 48 victories came by pin, a staggering stat that underscores his raw power and mat control. A three-time state finalist and two-time runner-up, he finally claimed gold in his senior season, sealing his legacy.

“Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey,” Merrill shared. “I’m proud to announce my commitment to Iowa State University. Go Cyclones!”

Merrill’s resume stretches well beyond California. He placed third at the U20 World Team Trials in freestyle and now sets his sights on the Junior Nationals in Fargo, where he’ll clash with elite prospects like Oklahoma State commit Dreshaun Ross and Iowa signee Michael Mocco.
